Strike - ballot - elections - a big day for Hove Park School

Tomorrow (Weds 16th July) is a big day for anti-academy campaigners at Hove Park School. In a victory for democratic process, three major aspects of the campaign coalesce: NUT strike action closes the school for a day; the result of the council's ballot of parents becomes known and the three missing parent governors are replaced as the election process concludes.

Combining with Mr Cameron's decision to move Michael Gove out of the Department for Education today, it feels like a shift is taking place around the unpopular and discredited academy programme.

Please email your support for the striking teachers to handsoffhoveparksch@gmail.com and if you live locally drop by to offer support on the picket lines at Nevill Road and Hangleton Way in Hove from 7am.

What a day - the parent ballot saw 71% vote against academy status. The parent governor elections returned three anti-academy candidates. And the teachers' strike closed the school.

Parents and carers campaigning against the academy are calling on the governors to end the disruption and speculation by announcing a withdrawal of the academy proposal. This would mean children and teachers could enjoy their holidays and start the new year without this decidedly unpopular threat hanging over them.

Natasha, Forgive for regurgitating old comments but I wondered whether the campaign group researched the Co-operative Trust model as an alternative way ahead? I mooted the idea in a previous thread:

"That said there is a potential alternative and that is to opt to form a Learning Community Cooperative Trust starting with Hove Park + West Blatchington with options for others to join:

And, yes, it has to be acknowledged that while this may seem a more palatable alternative there is a prevailing circumstances of the Co-operative Group to take into account; though this does seem to affect the banking arm as opposed to the main group."

Andy - thank you for your suggestions, we would love to engage with the SLT on alternative models, but they have said they won't talk to the group directly and haven't answered our questions on alternatives they have explored - as promised in their original leaflet for parents. Hopefully our new governors can get a more constructive dialogue.

Another big day for Hove Park School on Monday 22nd September as the governors vote on the academy conversion plan. Parents will be at the school gates from 5.45pm.

This comes just as the head of a Brighton & Hove academy is suspended while an investigation into pupil registration irregularities takes place

Let's hope the governors take note!

Well done Natasha. Many of us will have everything crossed in the hope that another tipping point approaches.
