Are the Press favouring positive stories from Academies?

At the recent "Picking up the Pieces" conference I suggested that, to counter the positive coverage of academies in the press (with one or two notable exceptions!), community schools should make a conscious effort to (a) invite MPs etc to events (b) issue press releases of positive news.

Two people, quite independently, told me that their local paper had told their schools that, if it wasn't an academy, the paper wasn't interested.

Have others had this reaction? Could people around the country test it out?

My local paper runs stories about all types of school: state and independent, academies and non-academies. These articles are always good to read - they show young people getting involved with charities, putting on productions, taking part in sport and so on.

The worst offender in pushing pro-academy propaganda is the Department for Education whose website marginalizes community schools. Its press releases constantly praise academies and the "virtues" of being an academy. National papers that just churn these articles are lazy and are not doing their job properly.

I can't honestly say I have seen any evidence of this in my own area (York) and I do get the local paper every night .
Where were the people based who were concerned about this, Jane?
