Cancelling a subject and switiching exam boards at A2

My son's school had informed my son during his first day of Year 13 that the school will no longer be teaching a subject he will be doing for A2. He was told to go to another school to do the subject (not an issue). However the other school teaches according to a different exam board and my son is struggling to understand as there is constant referral back to AS. My son's school has refused to bring the subject even though there are 5 students doing the subject and all are having difficulties. I have complained to the school over the last two weeks but to no avail. I'm asking what do I do now.

Thanks.

If you live in or near East London, you could bring this excellent question to the Education Question Time at Broadway Theatre, Barking, IG11 7LS, chaired by Sixth-Form College principal Eddie Playfair with a panel including NUT General Secretary Christine Blower, Mike Gapes MP, philosopher Stephen Law, Executive Head Teacher Maureen Okoye and Professor Ken Jones. They probably won't be able to answer the specifics of your son's situation, but there will be wider issues it raises.

What you can do depends on whether your son's school is an LA school or an Academy/Free School.

If the former, then you can take up the issue with the Chair of Governors, your local county/borough councillor and with the Children's Services department of your local council.

If the latter you are stuck with the decision of the school. You could complain to the DfE but don't hold your breath as you will be referred back to the school.

Academies/Free Schools are independent schools for which the taxpayer picks up the bill. If they have governors at all in the normally understood sense, then the majority will be appointed by the Principal/Sponsor/Academy Chain.

However as Bob points out your experience needs to be shared.

The school is an academy and I have a meeting with the Chair of Governors on Wednesday. Another issue I have found is that my son wishes to retake one of his AS modules during the June 2015 exam period, alongside his A2 exams. The JCQ exam transfer form states that exam results could be delayed and university places affected if a student retakes and exam.
