Community forced to take an academy

Rob Morgan's picture
Staffordshire County Council - as part of BSF - foisted an academy, onto Tamworth run by Landau Forte. Now the BSF money has disappeared, only the academy is getting the money to build an 11-16 school and sixth for centre. The sixth form centre will provide 16+ education for whole town as existing sixth form provision is being completely removed, so no choice.

There was a local campaign (Hands Off Tamworth Schools - HOTS) but it was completely ignored.

On 7th December 2010, we discovered that another secondary school - Queen Elizabeth's Mercian (QEMS) - has been simply handed over to Landau Forte with no public knowledge whatsoever. QEMS was coming out of special measures and so had an executive governorship. It is next door to the site of the sixth form centre.

This is very scary indeed. It seems there is no accountability here at all. A quick glance on the website doesn't glean much info.

The QEMS website now contains a newsletter published by Staffs CC stating what is going to happen. Unfortunately, the website is currently offline, though this happened last night too. There's nothing on the Landau Forte Tamworth website - no surprise there. The newsletter states that the remaining secondary schools in Tamworth will become part of the E-Act chain, so there won't be any community secondary schools in the town at all!

So would you say that this is the local LEA riding roughshod over people's wishes ?

Seems kinda tricky as I'm used to defending LEA's .So would you say that this is the local LEA riding roughshod over people's wishes ? Do you knowthat the Council are doing this under duress from the Government or because they feel the LEA has failed to deliver improvements to Tamworth Schools and that this is the solution?
