I have been a Governor of my local primary school (Broad Oak in Manchester) for some years and a supporter of the principles set out on this website for much longer. There has been a disproportionate obsession with school autonomy for many years now - schools pretty much control their own destiny anyway. It doesn't help that the media persists in using the inaccurate phrase "local authority control". I'm pleased to say that a group of local residents played managed to stop a barmy proposal for our local High School to Federate with two other High Schools miles away. Apart from weakening the connection to the surrounding community I suspect it would have been a step closer to Academy status.
