Janet Downs: Parents critical of Government’s education policies, YouGov poll reveals

Despite all the hype, the Government seems to be losing the battle to persuade parents that academy status will improve education. A YouGov survey on behalf of the National Union of Teachers (NUT) found that only 14% definitely agreed that academy status would result in improvement. 55% did not while 31% said they didn’t know. Gove’s supporters might be cynical about results from ... read more and comment →

Fiona Millar: Outside the Tory bubble, Gove not doing that well

Interesting poll here from You Gov which breaks down public opinion into different policy areas. Labour appears to have a pretty solid lead over the Conservatives when it comes to education, which has widened in the past month from 6% to 9 %. Labour is also ahead in almost every  social class, age and regional group in this area of policy. ... read more and comment →

Janet Downs: Academies, free schools and profit – blog fails to debunk “hysterical” article with facts

A Telegraph article claims to rebuff a “hysterical” Guardian piece about profit-making educational providers by providing a catalogue of facts. But this seemingly robust debunking missed the mark. FACT re free schools, academies and profit: academies and free schools are managed by charitable trusts but there’s nothing to stop them outsourcing to a for-profit Educational Management Organisation (EMO). IES hopes to ... read more and comment →

Janet Downs: Mixed support for free schools – even among Tory voters

The latest YouGov poll found that only 23% of respondents thought free schools would make education standards better. 23% thought they’d make no difference and 33% thought they’d make standards worse. 21% didn’t know. When asked about academies and whether conversion would improve education standards, 27% thought they’d make standards better, 24% thought they’d make things worse, 29% said conversion would ... read more and comment →
