Henry Stewart: Gove’s Abacc is Crude, Misleading and a Misuse of Data – Careers Advisers

The Institute of Careers Guidance has this week joined the critique of the new Department for Education (DfE) measure of 3 'facilitating' subjects (known as the 'abacc'). This measure is supposedly a test how well a school prepares its students for the top, Russell Group, universities. We have already pointed out how ridiculous the measure is, as the Russell Group ... read more and comment →

Latest comment by Janet Downs: "The flawed "facilitating A levels" measure was announced in July (thereby showing a level of premeditation) and crudely used in January to damn state schools that performed poorly on this unecessary and damaging measure. Far from encouraging pupils to choose what ......"

Henry Stewart: Academies: Do the DfE Claims Stack Up?

The 2nd release of detailed school level GCSE data is due next week, on 24th January. As the government has made clear that its primary programme for school improvement is academy conversion, this information is important. It enables analysis of whether schools who become academies do better and therefore whether there is any basis to the £1 billion plus that ... read more and comment →

Fiona Millar: Outside the Tory bubble, Gove not doing that well

Interesting poll here from You Gov which breaks down public opinion into different policy areas. Labour appears to have a pretty solid lead over the Conservatives when it comes to education, which has widened in the past month from 6% to 9 %. Labour is also ahead in almost every  social class, age and regional group in this area of policy. ... read more and comment →

LocalSchoolsNetwork: Teaching to the test is OK, says Gove

We reproduce this post from Human Scale Education on Gove's evidence to the Education Select Committee. The original article is here. “There is nothing wrong with teaching to the test,’ said education secretary Michael Gove to an early December meeting of the House of Commons Education Select Committee, as long as ‘the test is right.’ Gove’s argument for this challenge to orthodoxy ... read more and comment →

Henry Stewart: Yougov Poll Shows Support for Teaching Unions

Just in case you missed it, here are the questions on education in today's Yougov poll (p9-10) for the Sunday Times. They indicate public support for the teaching unions, and back up Alistair Campbell's assertion that Gove may delight the media but is out of touch with the public. The message is clear: The clear majority, 63% of those expressing an opinion, ... read more and comment →

Henry Stewart: Leading UK Designers Call on Gove to Change Course

Referring to the British man who designed the iPhone and the iPad, this web site has previously asked "Will Gove’s (ebacc) changes prevent the Jonathan Ive’s of the future succeeding?". Now Jonathan Ive, Apple's lead designer, has joined Stella McCartney, Sir Terence Conron and many of the UK's other leading designers in writing a letter to Michael Gove warning that ... read more and comment →

Henry Stewart: Gove’s new exams, only for the more academic students?

What to make of the new government proposals for exams at age 16? It is hard to work out, from the widespread media coverage, what will be included. The actual consultation paper does not, for instance, include any mention of 3 hour exams, repeatedly referred to in the media. The widely reported proposal that the new exams could be taken ... read more and comment →

Allan Beavis: Gove admits Tory government could move towards full profit-making from state schools at the Leveson Inquiry

During questioning at the Leveson Inquiry today, Michael Gove gave the strongest indication yet that a Tory government would let schools be run for profit. It is unclear whether this has not yet been rolled out because public opinion is opposed to it, as shown by this Populus poll or whether Nick Clegg had inconveniently broken ranks and reassured ... read more and comment →

Allan Beavis: A reminder – How Finnish Education reform addressed the economic inequality of society

Finnish schools and why they are an inspiring model to emulate has been discussed on Local Schools Network many times before, but it is worth thinking about them again. Posts on this site about the recent speeches and "initiaves" by Gove and Clegg claiming to prove the coalition's commitment to social mobility and cohesion have prompted debate once again about the ... read more and comment →

Allan Beavis: Michael Gove claims that private schools’ domination of positions of power is “morally indefensible” – so why is he doing so little to encourage social cohesion?

The Guardian today reports that in a speech at Brighton College, which has just been named “Independent School of the Year”, Michael Gove declared that the dominance of public schoolboys in the upper echelons of politics, business, the arts and sport was “morally indefensible”. At first glance, his speech seemed to suggest that Gove had seen the error of his ... read more and comment →
