Professor Aneez Esmail: Don’t believe what you hear – work with your school and you too can have an outstanding local school

When we first had to make a choice about secondary schools for our first child in 2001, we were concerned. There were local stories about bad behaviour, bullying low standards and poor teaching. We could have afforded to opt out and send him to a fee paying school. However we made a point of visiting the school and talked to ... read more and comment →

Francis Gilbert: My joy that my son is going to the local, much-improved comprehensive

My wife and I learnt today, on National Offer Day, that our son, in Year 6, is going to the local comprehensive in Tower Hamlets, our first choice school. We are both delighted that he's going to the school for several reasons. Firstly, the school really is "on the up". My son will certainly get a great academic education there: it ... read more and comment →

Jonny Walker: State schools simply do it better!

I'm not from an area where there was much school selection anyway - one of the beauties of Doncaster being in the Socialist Republic of South Yorkshire has been that the comprehensive ideal was pretty much the status quo. I attended Danum School, a very large comprehensive, from Year 7 right through until the end of Sixth Form and generally had ... read more and comment →

Francis Gilbert: Birbalsingh has changed her tune since she was Head of Languages

IMPORTANT NOTE: "Katharine Birbalsingh has asked us not to name any of her previous schools in our blogs and comments  as the ‘Ordinary School’ featured in  ‘To Miss with Love’ is fictional." Since reading her fictional diatribe against state education, To Miss With Love, and writing a review of it for The Observer,  I've been starting to investigate the truth about Katherine Birbalsingh ... read more and comment →

Fiona Millar: Rivendale School – cracks start to appear in the free school model

We may be starting to see a few cracks appearing in the shiny new free school model.  The proposers of the Rivendale Free School, in West London, have announced that they are withdrawing their bid for a local health centre which they had planned to convert to a new school by September. The reasons for this are two fold - ... read more and comment →

Emma Bishton: Will free schools close the attainment gap?

When announcing the free schools programme, Michael Gove made a point of claiming that free schools would ‘close the attainment gap’. I am completely opposed to the principle of free schools, but I was curious to see if he had approved schools in areas where this could possibly happen. The story told by the schools nearest the first ... read more and comment →

Fiona Millar: Free schools and academies may be no more popular than existing local schools

I am interested in seeing the evidence that free schools and academies are or will be 'wildly' more popular than maintained schools as suggested today in one of our comments. I have just come across this story from a local paper in Hammersmith and Fulham, about to get a two free schools and an academy. It reveals that one free school ... read more and comment →

Androulla Zucker: Milton Keynes foundation Schools seek Academy status – four of them!

They are foundation schools and already own land and buildings, employ teachers. They claim they will have greater freedom about how their budget is used. There is no visible opposition going on here in Milton Keynes. In fact my daughter's school recently closed it's parent association saying that only it's venture trust will raise funds in future. That has closed ... read more and comment →
