Helen Rowe: A personal story

I feel that I am in unique position to comment on the success of our local comprehensive. My three children more than most, span a wide range of abilities and aptitudes. My oldest is bright, “academic” and pronounced “gifted and talented” (whatever that may mean). I then have twins, the oldest of whom (by 15 mins) is keen on sport, ... read more and comment →

Shane Rae: Hard to get their ear…

I've been a teacher for 20 years starting out in Canada, then the US and for the last 12 years in the UK. I have been shortlisted to receive the National Leadership in Teaching Award 5 times. I have been an active governor at my local primary school, Brize Norton Primary, for the past 9 years (and was ... read more and comment →

Natacha Kennedy: The threat of schools’ privatisation – how to respond.

David Cameron’s hugely undemocratic plan, unsurprisingly not in the Tory manifesto, to privatise everything, clearly represents a threat to schools and our children’s futures. It raises the spectre of Capita, Serco, Walmart, Lidl, Primark, or companies based in China, America, Singapore, the Cayman Islands or Liechtenstein taking over our schools. They would do this by undercutting the current cost, then ... read more and comment →

"Stoke Newington schoolkids are marching in Clissold Park for gay rights! "I blew them a kiss and shed a little tear" tweeted @sioframacherie this afternoon. It is LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender) week at Stoke Newington School. Leyla Mohan: Society needs ALL children to have the best education they can get.

My daughter has just turned one, so I know it's early to be thinking about schools, but a few factors have recently converged for me: - My politics are left-leaning and I'm furious about the current state of affairs; - We're new to the area and trying to buy a house we'll want to live in for years and years; - I've been ... read more and comment →

Wendy Adeniji: Existing state schools are doing a great job

I work as a trainer of teachers, running courses nationally, going into schools to run training and provide support, working for local authorities and speaking at national conferences. I train both primary and secondary teachers in teaching modern languages and have the privilege of meeting hard-working, committed teachers who really know their stuff ever day. In the last year ... read more and comment →

diane goldrei: My children, now grown up, all went to state schools and I want to see all children having the opportunity to benefit from the best possible state education.

I have registered today following the Today programme revelation that while funding promised by the previous government to improve conditions in the fabric of specific schools was cancelled on the grounds that the money could not longer be afforded, millions of pounds are being sent on purchasing or refurbishing "free schools". I totally agree with Francis Gilbert that this is ... read more and comment →

Francis Gilbert: A mother praises a comprehensive in Alnwick, Northumberland

A mother who lives near Alnwick, Northumberland, told me this heartening story about her local comprehensive: I attended the Duchess Community High School in the late 1980s, and I didn’t do very well there. My attendance was poor, I frequently skived off and no teacher seemed to notice. I managed to scrape five GCSEs at the end of my time there. ... read more and comment →

Homerton99: Success story

I would like to recommend Daubeney Primary School in Hackney. It has recently come out of special measures and I couldn't praise it highly enough. The class teacher is really switched on and there is ... read more and comment →

Marie Faulkner: Acton High School – a good West London local school

The West London Free School was set up by Toby Young et al, claiming to fill the vacuum of a suitable 'local' school up to acceptable standard for their children. In this article I have chosen not to focus on the group of parents/teachers/politicians/business opportunists who want to set up this new 'free' school. Instead I have decided to take ... read more and comment →
