The Summer Fayre was very jolly...

The summer fayre at my son's local primary was both wonderful and a little poignant for me today. My son is leaving the school in a few weeks so there was a sense of time passing -- but it was "good time", a wonderful time in fact. I stopped and talked to lots of parents and pupils, all of whom I didn't know before my child joined the school. And spent quite a bit of money on cakes, and a tin-can walkie-talkie. This is what the good life is about...

It sounds as if the summer fayre at your son's school is one of those events which mark a rite of passage in Year 6 - the last function in a child's final year at primary. At my granddaughter's school all the children produce a May entertainment in the village square - each class producing something different. Except, that is, for the Year 6 leavers, who mark their last term with dancing round the maypole. It's a tradition that's been going on so long that some of the children's parents can remember doing it when they were at the school.

Next year it's my granddaughter's turn, and I know that her Mum and I will be wrecks (and Dad and Granddad will probably cough gruffly and pop off to the pub).

Francis - pleased you enjoyed your son's summer fayre, went to my daughter's the other day. Yes, I too felt that there had been a passing of time. She's looking forward to 'big school' now, has been for several months.

Saw you on the national news the other day - you came across really well.

I am slap bang in the middle of the trauma that is guiding my hormonal and every so slightly uptight 11 year old out of her primary school years. Last week she had the trauma of her induction week at her new school. I was in tears when I dropped her off - barely able to talk. We now have the trauma of the last school fair, the last disco, the leavers service, and then the epic last day itself.
New parents be warned - starting your child at primary school is not anywhere near as traumatic as when they leave it.

My son did his induction day at his new secondary too; it was very weird seeing him there! You have my sympathies Sarah. Like Alan's child, my son is looking forward to secondary, feeling that he's a bit too "big" for primary now.

For me personally, it's strange that this sunshine should herald the end of an era.
